TELLING STORIES

A THOUSAND WORDS

EVERY PICTURE
TELLS A STORY

More a story teller than a photographer, Dave relies on images to capture the essence of a place. It’s a lot more efficient and expressive and relatable, but it’s that simple. Except when it isn’t. And he’s been doing it for a long time.

PEOPLE

Dave has been revealing peoples' personalities for 40 years, and he learned early on that almost everyone hates to have their picture taken. Nothing is more rewarding than working with someone to get them to relax and smile; that's when good things happen.

PLACES

Most of his professional career has focused on architecture and design. His work captures the experience of the architecture and the way people interact with the built environment. It reveals more about the place and the design intent.

PERSPECTIVE

Photography captures a moment in time, and it relies almost completely on perspective. Yes, it's subjective and often personal, but it can communicate a more objective truth. Photography helps reveal the story and gives everything context, contour and energy.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT DAVE

Except for a brief time when his hands were too small to hold a camera, Dave Whitcomb has been a photographic storyteller his entire life. He grew up in Baltimore, where he and his wife and pets continue to live, but he has travelled the world, photographing most of it.

Dave served as the in-house photographer for RTKL, the global architecture and urban design practice, where he excelled at capturing the essence of the firm’s work and the indomitable spirit of the people who worked there, almost all of whom would consider Dave a friend. His process revolves around his clients and the stories they want to tell. Every assignment is an opportunity to reveal or celebrate something new.

Dave’s lens captures the bigness of small things and somehow finds intimacy in the huge spaces of our lives. No one works harder or cares more.

More on Dave.
